On March 26, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Wellington County OPP Traffic Management Unit was conducting proactive traffic enforcement and initiated a traffic stop on a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) on Main Street West within Palmerston.

As a result of the investigation, a 67-year-old from Wingham is charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:

  • Defective brakes
  • Fail to complete daily inspection report forthwith after inspection

Additionally, a business associated to the traffic stop is charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:

  • Fail to ensure performance standards are met
  • Fail to supply driver with daily inspection schedule
  • Operate commercial motor vehicle – no valid CVOR certificate

CMV collisions carry unique risks. Due to the size and weight of these large vehicles, when they are involved in a collision – especially on a highway – the outcome can be catastrophic. CMVs can weigh more than 60,000 kg. (132,277 lbs). When combined with speeds ranging from 80 to 105 km/h, these vehicles generate significant momentum and energy, giving them the potential to cause extensive loss of life, injuries and property damage. The OPP recognizes that there are many safe, responsible CMV drivers who contribute to safe roads in Ontario.

If you have an urgent traffic complaint or if you suspect someone is driving while their ability to operate a motor vehicle is impaired by drugs or alcohol, please call 911 immediately. If you have a non-emergency traffic complaint, you may also call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
